The title is a play on Sushi Bender š
Thanks to all who shared your opinions on the new FTC Guidelines. Personally, I also feel that I am already technically “following” them, but it does make you stop and think – $11,000 is a lot of moolah to be charged for something I consider a hobby!
Apologies for not posting yesterday, but with all that went on last week I am currently playing “catch up” and it has been busy busy! However, that didn’t stop me from a very enjoyable foodie date with Mara on Tuesday night! After work, I took the train to the suburbs to pay her a visit and go out for dinner. She took me to Daruma, a Japanese Restaurant that she says is her absolute favorite.
We perused the menu and Mara suggested we start with the agedashi tofu, which were lightly fried tempura style. The tofu itself was very soft and the flavor from the mushroom and miso broth was amazing! I was a fan.
I gave Mara the reigns when it came to the rolls because I knew she wouldn’t steer me wrong š We decided to share four of them. The first three all came out together.
First, we have the Crazy Roll, a gigantic roll (about the diameter of a silver dollar) filled with salmon, tuna, yellowtail, cucumber, avocado, masago and spicy sauce. These rolls were finger food – no chopsticks required š I loved their size!
Next up was the Caterpillar Roll, which comes with eel and egg and is wrapped in an avocado shell. I loved the unagi (eel) sauce they put on top of the roll and the avocado shell gave it so much more pizazz. It was another winner.
The last roll on our first plate was the Spicy Tuna Roll. It’s official title is “harumaki” and it comes with a spicy sauce, scallions and fresh tuna. This one had quite a kick to it! Since I’m a fan of all things spicy, I really enjoyed it.
But believe it or not, the best was yet to come! The last roll they brought out was called the Crunch Roll, which was composed of tempura shrimp with spicy sauce, rolled up in rice and topped with smelt roe, tempura crunch, dried seaweed and more unagi (eel) sauce. Wow, there are no words. It was my favorite!
After we finished off every single piece, I was perfectly full and content. I enjoyed catching up with Mara, talking about our jobs, life, etc. and unfortunately, our visit was cut short due to the train coming sooner than I thought! But before we left, we made sure to take a picture š
I had a blast. Thanks again, Mara! We will have to have another foodie date very soon.
CALL FOR QUESTIONS!
I’ve got a fun Skype interview lined up today with Dr. Kristi M. Funk. Dr. Funk is a celebrity breast cancer surgeon. We will be discussing the importance of early detection and breast health. If you could ask Dr. Funk a question, what would it be?
You may see it in the video!
P.S. I am slowly but surely making my way around the blogosphere to catch up on my reading!!
Abrazos,
That looks like some of the most delicious sushi I have ever seen. We don’t have many sushi restaurants close to me so I rarely get it good!
You and Mara are adorable!!
My Q: As it’s widely known, alcohol consumption affects breast health. To what extent do young women (oh, say in their early 20s) need to be concerned about this? How much damage are we possibly inflicting on ourselves at a younger age? When should we become concerned?
Also, there is so much questioning of when women should start to get examines for breast cancer. When should we first get an examination?
Thanks, Jenn!!
You and Mara rrrrrrrrock š
This sushi date looks so fun! I love all the different rolls you all picked. The Caterpillar roll looks particularly delicious to me. A roll wrapped in avocado- yes please! Now I’m craving sushi and it’s only 8:30AM. š
The one question I would have for a breast cancer surgeon has to do with the self-checks. When I do them I feel things that one might consider lumps, but I think they are just glands because they’ve always felt this way and I’ve had a yearly check-up since I was 18. So my question is what exactly would a lump feel like and how can you tell the different between a gland and lump? Maybe this is more of a question for an OB-GYN, but I’m assuming the surgeon would know the answer as well.
Thanks Jenn. I hope your interview goes well.
What a fun dinner! Its so nice to catch up with friends. I am hoping to fit some catching up in myself this weekend! Cute pic of you two.
For your interview, I would like to know…my Aunt had breast cancer. She got the testing done to see if it is something that runs in our family (genetic testing) and it came back negative. Does the Dr think this testing is accurate? What does she believe could be the cause of some non-genetic breast cancers(I know this is a super general question…I always like to hear theories ;))?
Looks like a fantastic dinner! and great company š
what a fun dinner. i’m so jealous I don’t live in Chicago and can’t join in for these little blogger dates! š
What a cool interview! I guess my question would be when do I need to really start checking/being tested. My grandmother had breast cancer a few years ago (she’s clear now!) and a distant cousin had it as well, but no one else in my immediate family has had it yet.
have a great day Jenn!
Yum! Sushi is my favorite favorite food. My brother and I went out last year and consumed $100 worth of sushi!!! SO worth it. š
The sushi looks great! I love any roll with eel in it so I’m drooling over these pictures.
Have a great day!
What a fun time! That crunch roll sounds/looks soooo good! I love sushi!
How about asking her about family history and how it impacts each generations chances of having breast cancer?
I had SO much fun!!! I can’t wait til we can get together again… i need a field trip to IKEA before the wedding for candles/holders…so maybe you can come too?
I do have a question for Dr. Funk. As someone who is naturally well-endowed, what part does that play in early detection? Will it be harder for doctors to find abnormalities?
ohhhh sooooooosh! I’ll be honest, I got sick on the stuff years ago and haven’t been able to stomach it since — but this post is kind of making me crave it. never though i’d see the day.. way to go Bender!
That sushi is all so pretty!
Mmmm delicious. I haven’t had sushi in so long. I think it’s time to change that!!
Awww, look at you guys having a foodie date! So cute! Hehe. The sushi looks delicious. I haven’t had any in a while, since BlogHer actually! That’s way too long!
Looove sushi! And eel and avocado make such a great mix. Well, avocado on any roll makes a great mix. And that crunch roll! I love when there’s that little bit of texture on top.
I haven’t had sushi in ages and that looks great!
My question: I am currently reading The China Study, the author makes the claim that eating animal protein plays a role in cancer. What are the doctor’s views on this? Has she noticed any trends between vegetarian and meat eating patients?
So jealous you and Mara got to hang! I need to visit Chi-town so I can meet the both of you. š
Oh that’s an exciting interview! I look forward to reading it.
Your sushi looks fantastic. I LOVe spicy tuns rolls, and I also love sushi with the *CRUNCH*!
Oh man. SUSHI. I’m craving sushi now š
YUM! I have been craving sushi lately and this post put me over the edge!
That soup looks unbelievable!
I want to eat sushi with you and Mara š
Looks like you guys had a blast!
I second Kailey’s question; that’s something I’ve read lots of conflicting reports about, and I’m really curious to know how much I should be watching my intake.
Such beautiful sushi!
Love your coat too:)
Me too! That’s an adorable coat.
I’m a big sushi lover, and that sushi looks amazing!! Glad you had fun with Mara:)
What a fun meet-up! Looks like Mara knows her sushi stuff. You may know this already, but I learned during my high school Japanese classes that the red head in your picture is for wishes! The owner makes a wish, colors in one eye and if/when the other comes true, they color in the second eye š
Neat interview–can’t wait to read it! This isn’t exactly related to surgery, but I’d love to hear her opinion of all of the pink products on the market. I’ve read some articles criticizing companies for not donating all the funds that they promise or doing other sketchy things. Do all of these pink funds actually support research? Does she feel that companies are making a difference or trying too hard to profit off of the pink ribbon campaign? Hope that’s not too cynical–I admire anyone or any company that is trying to make a difference!
I love sushi.
I can’t believe you are both wearing jackets already!
gah! i need to come to chicago so i can have sushi with you two pretty ladies! and of course to hang out. š
yummm looks sooo good! i havent had sushi in a long time and dont know why I love it and you made me realize why I miss it so much! it is delish and soo pretty!! š
That sushi looks fantastic!
i need to add you to my skype friend list!!!
YAY FOR SUSHI AND BIGGER YAY FOR 2 OF MY MOST FAV BLOGGIESSSSSS
Looks like you guys had a great time!
ahhhhh i miss you girls! I need to come to chicago soon!
Speaking of which…. the Mister and I are coming for my birthday!
Let me know if you want to grab breakfast/lunch/coffee/whatev! š
Yay – love Mara! Wished I love sushi, but I don’t. I’ve tried it so many times, and I can’t get beyond the seafood taste of the nori. Bleck. However, that avocado shell – now that I could handle!
Question for Dr. Funk – what are her feelings/thoughts on soy intake as I’m constantly reading about soy and estrogen levels related to breast health.
what beautiful sushi! that tofu dish also looks/sounds really yummy, i’ll have to look for it next time i’m getting some sushi!
Love both of you girls—this would have been such a fun meet-up š And the photos of your grandma are lovely. She kind of looks like Jackie Kennedy in her youth–gorgeous! I guess it runs in the family š
Wow… looks delicious, I mean fun, I mean both š
My paternal grandmother had breast cancer and other types are on both sides of my family. One doctor suggested that I get the BRCA-1 screening. Another said it was unnecessary since the breast cancer was on the paternal side, and no close females have had it on my mother’s side. So, I guess my question to Dr. Funk, is who should get the screening?
Thanks J!
Looks like my kinda dinner!
Btw, I love your coat in that picture–so cute!
Wow, I have never seen sushi look so good!
Breast Question:
What kinds of patients heal best after surgery? I’m wondering if patients who follow healthy diets show better healing after procedures! I’m very interested in dietary benefits when it comes to cancer prevention and treatment.
OMG that sushi dinner is AMAZING!!
ps-i’m SO totally behind in reading and emailing (it’s really inexcusable) but I will be messaging you soon! Sorry to be a bad bloggie friend š
how was the interview? can not wait to hear about it and all that you learned.
Oh my sushi LOVE. I can’t remember how long it’s been now since I’ve had sushi and seeing all of yours is making me crave it SO badly. You girlies are too cute!
I love sushi….those rolls are works of art!!! Spicy tuna is always my favorite. š
