Dr. Kristi Funk: Breast Health + Early Detection [Video!]

Good morning, everyone!

I received the clip of my interview with Dr. Kristi Funk yesterday. I’d like to give a big thank you to the people who work on Yoplait’s Save Lids to Save Lives program, who made this interview possible.

As I mentioned in my last post, I was only able to get to a few of the GREAT questions you asked because of the timing of the interview. If there is any question you still have after watching this video, please leave it in the comment section. I will combine them with those from my initial post on this topic to create a list of follow-up questions for Dr. Funk to answer.

The video is pretty long, but very informative. Don’t mind the fact that I was very nervous and did absolutely NO introduction! What a broadcast journalist major I am, right? 😉 Sheesh! I promise I tried to cut out the “ums” as the interview progressed…

Questions that will be addressed in the video:

  • What age women should first start checking/getting checked for breast cancer?
  • When should you perform self-exams to ensure you don’t mistake a gland for a lump?
  • Is there a genetic connection that plays into early detection?
  • Dr. Funk’s personal beliefs on lifestyle and diet and their role in prevention
  • Are women with larger breasts more likely to “miss” the signs of cancer?
  • Information on Dr. Funk’s Pink Lotus Breast Center (click link for even more info!)

The video is below (in case you can’t see it in Google Reader). I hope you enjoy it!

I’ll be back later with some foodie fun 🙂

Abrazos,

  4. Thank you so much for this, Jenn! It was soo informative. I’m an ashkanazi jew, so I’m definitely going to look into getting tested for that gene! And, aahhhh, I eat all of my food burnt–not meat, but still!

    Great job, chica!!

  5. you are a natural behind the camera girl! and thanks so much for sharing this. There is actually a history of breast cancer in my family so this post really hits home for me and I’m really thrilled that your spreading awareness!

  6. AWESOME job Jenn! Loved the video. You asked such great questions and lead the interview like a pro. I’m surprised by the fact that breast cancer rates are the same in larger and smaller breasted women. I wonder how detection rates compare?

Looking forward to the foodie fun post 🙂

  7. […] Jenn’s interview with breast cancer expert, Dr. Kristi Funk. Amid all of this month’s breast cancer awareness fund-raising efforts, we have to remember be aware of breast cancer as it pertains to us. Jenn’s interview is very informative and taught me some things about breast cancer I’d never heard. Did you know that Ashkenazi Jews are exponentially more likely to carry a gene that’s been linked to breast cancer? Or that drinking in excess of 5-7 glasses of alcohol per week increases your risk for developing breast cancer? There’s a lot of very valuable and interesting information in the short segment, so I urge you to watch it! […]

  8. REALLY GREAT INTERVIEW and I, too, was a bit surprised that the breast size doesnt play into the equation.
For some reason Id though we of the diminutive mammaries would detect more easily.

  9. great interview – very informative! and i am impressed with your videochat interviewing skills 🙂
