Hi everyone! I apologize for my lack of posting these past few days. I’ve been studying for two exams – both of which I am taking TODAY – and doing some end-of-quarter homework. It also didn’t help that my flight yesterday was delayed for FOUR hours 👿 I know some of you have been dealing with similar holiday travel woes – I’m right there with you!
Before I head out to my doom exams, I wanted to share an interesting article with you. It shows how some foods that are consided “low glycemic” – aka good for a healthy diet – are not what you’d expect. The headline says it all: Twix and pizza – are these really diet foods?
According to some science, eating a Twix would be better for you than eating a slice of watermelon. Hm…something doesn’t seem right there!! Let me know what your thoughts are if you get a chance to read it!

Very interesting article. I just don’t think that eating foods according to their glycemic index is the way to go. For a twix to be “better” than watermelon, you’d have to compare 5 cups of watermelon to 3/4 a king size twix, according to the article. And you are still comparing a nutrient filled calories to empty calories.
I can’t think of anything that can beat a nutrient filled diet that includes lots of fruits, veggies, whole grains with protein and good fats! Everything in moderation!

I read that article in Men’s Health and it was very informative. I find the glycemic index fascinating.

i read something similar about the GI diet a few weeks ago and thought the same thing – it truly makes NO sense!

i think that article is BS. i’ve always been opposed to diets that cut out or limit healthy foods like fruit just because they have some sugar (i tried south beach once and thought it was RIDICULOUS that I couldn’t have an apple for 2 weeks. wtf!) in my opinion it’s all about eating as many real, whole foods as possible and enjoying indulgent goodies in moderation. + exercise of course!

Candy bar over fruit? Ummm…that has to set off a warning signal for anyone in the medical/dietetics field. I’m a bit confused about how some doctors actually endorse things like this. I saw a MD on TV a couple weeks ago saying that you should eat nothing for breakfast, five bites for lunch and five bites for dinner (and it didn’t matter what you ate). I was laughing out loud–No way I could do that!
Whooppeee–that is a crazy! i heard a similar diet like the “5 bite” one about eating SNICKERS and 2 whoppers a day!! how strange our society is!! seriously–

I didn’t make it through the whole article, but I read enough … the bottom line, in my opinion, is the sugar found naturally in foods is WAY better for you than any manufactured product, wrapped in a pretty package and bought in a store. Interesting article – thanks for sharing!

I’ve always been kind of skeptical of the GI trend. Because that is all it seems to be – yet another trendy “diet”. I don’t buy it.

I guess I just can’t get on board the the GI diet or any other diet, for that matter. I think it’s finally catching on that you just need to eat healthy, whole foods as much as you can and exercise. People are always looking for the magic solution when the simplist (yet often times, most difficult) solution is right there in front of us! Interesting article!

Twix and pizza? Pizza, YES (for me!), but I don’t think Twix could ever be a healthy food- unless they were somehow made out of apples and carrots!

As anyone who reads my blog knows, I am a big fan of the glycemic index, but it absolutely can’t be taken out of context, any more than fat content or fiber content or sugar content can be taken out of context. Junk food is junk food, whether or not it happens to be free of sugar or contain slowly absorbed carbohydrates or whatever.
It’s important to remember that a high fat content slows the rate at which your body absorbs carbohydrates, so foods that are high in fat are generally lower on the glycemic index. This doesn’t mean that the glycemic index is bad or broken…just that it doesn’t tell you everything about a piece of food.
