Hi there 🙂
I am so excited to report that I met and exceeded my goal of under 1 hour for my 10k race! My official time was 54:00.9 and my watch said 54:01, so that sounds about right! I could not have done it without your support and my superstar racing partner. I promised a recap, so here it is!
Bobby and I woke up at 6:45 am to make sure we had ample time to fuel, get ready and get to the race site. I enjoyed my “fuel” with some beautiful flowers.
I decided to go with a relatively light combo that I have tried in the past and found to be successful: two slices of whole wheat toast (plus one small bread end), 1 tbsp. almond butter and 1 tbsp. mixed berry conserve. The toppings were spread out among the two slices + one mini slice.
I also enjoyed a caffeine boost in the form of Coffee Cocoa.
We geared up and shipped out as soon as possible to allow time to check our stuff, look around and stretch. Also, I was incredibly anxious 🙂 Here we are once we finally arrived at Grant Park!
We met up with one of my co-workers (Hi, Maureen!) to say hi and then headed on over to the starting line. I did as much stretching as possible, but was still so nervous for that gun to go off. I just wasn’t sure that I could do it – to be honest, even though I’ve been training for 1.5 months, I’ve really only ran 6-7 miles twice in my entire life. The thought of trying to do it as fast as possible was terrifying!
Once that gun did go off, however, I was completely in a zone. I had my motivation and my fuel, so I guess the combination paid off. Here’s a look at my splits:
- Mile 1 – 9:00 – I wanted to start out at medium speed to see how I was feeling
- Mile 2- 8:50 – I told Bobby that we should aim to keep our pace for the next 3 miles
- Mile 3- 8:50 – I was so happy when I realized I actually DID keep pace 🙂
- Mile 4 – 8:40 – I was shocked that I was actually going faster, and inspired to pick it up
- Mile 5 – 8:30 – At this point, we had 1.2 to go, so I knew I should just go all out
- Mile 6 – 8:30 – Using up all my energy by this point!!
- Last .2 – 8:25 – Considering my legs were like jelly, this was my all out sprint to finish!
The numbers above are all rounded but it really did fall into place pretty evenly! I could not have been more pleased. My official time was 54:01, as I mentioned, and my average pace was 8:43ish.
Bobby was such a great running partner. I knew he could go faster, but he was willing to keep pace with me and I could not have been more appreciative. I couldn’t have done it without him!
Here we are looking gross and sweaty 🙂
And here’s the video I made, as promised!! It’s about 40 seconds long.
Don’t mind my awkwardness 😉 But I am very thankful for all of your support, both with the race and beyond. I could not have gotten through the past week or the race in the same way I have without your constant love and understanding. I appreciate it more than you know!
We were going to go out to brunch and make a brunch video, but at the last minute I decided I needed to go up to Milwaukee sooner rather than later. Instead, I came back and made a bowl of Almond Butter & Jelly Oatmeal. It really hit the spot.
Yes, I am obsessed with this combination. Yes, I ate it for breakfast and lunch.
I quickly ate, got ready and set off to Milwaukee, where I am now. I can’t say much more about that because unfortunately, the day turned into one of the hardest of my life. But let’s keep this post positive, shall we? I ran this race for myself but more importantly, for grandma, and that’s all there is to it!
Hug your family today. Kiss your family today. Tell your family you love them today.
